An equine photographer in the “horse-country” of Bucks and Lancaster Counties, Pennsylvania — and serving the surrounding areas including Unionville, Kennett Square, and Central New Jersey — Stephen (or “Steve” to his friends) captures the power and grace that exemplifies the modern sport horse. Based in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic region, Steve has had opportunities to photograph disciplines from Hunter-Jumpers to Dressage and Eventing, equine sports from Polo to Gymkhana, and spanning the traditional imagery of Fox Hunting to the flash of Western showmanship.
Published both locally and nationally, Steve has photographed riders, young and old, from local “back-yard” shows and family-run barns up through Olympic competitors; and has provided eye-catching imagery to a variety of businesses.
"There’s an Arabian Proverb that I’ve heard quoted: ‘The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears.’ I like to think that I’m capturing a little bit of that in my images."
Growing up, Steve was surrounded by animals throughout his childhood. There was always a stray cat, dog, or other pet being taken into the household – enough that he originally toyed with the idea of studying veterinary medicine. His life instead took a different path as he decided that he wasn’t quite sure that he’d ever be able to handle "putting down" a sick animal – ending up in the technology world. Even still, a childhood love of photography and capturing images of the animals (and people) in his life persisted over the years.
After moving to the Philadelphia region in 1997 (oddly enough, the area in which both of his parents were born), it was probably fate that he would end up meeting a local dressage rider and finding a deep connection to the horse world. Over a number of years, Steve pursued understanding and capturing correctness of form while still capturing the joy that flows from people when they are riding.
"I understand the drive that many equestrians have for perfection – both in their riding and in allowing the natural grace of movement that every horse has at birth to shine through – and I attempt to portray that grace and perfection in my images, along with capturing the emotion bond between partners."
Steve is available for show/event photography in Southeastern Pennsylvania and all around the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as for portraits of you and your horse. Call or email for more information and to book your portrait session.
Steve’s passion for horses and knowledge of equine conformation and equestrian sports also makes him the perfect photographer to help you capture eye-catching promotional images of your stallion/brood mares as well as dressage, eventing, and hunter prospects.
